White Linen Pants for Women Over 50: How to Wear Them with Confidence and Style

Now listen, I know what some of you are thinking. White pants? At our age?
Too much fuss. Too see-through. Too easy to spill coffee on.
But let me tell you something right here and now: you’re not too old, too round, too messy, or too anything to wear white pants. Especially a nice linen pair in the summer. Honestly, they feel like a little vacation and they’ll look great on your vacation.

When you find the right pair of white pants, it can be just the thing that makes you feel like yourself again. Light, easy, and just a little bit elegant without trying too hard.

Let’s Talk About What Works

First off, linen is linen. It wrinkles, it breathes, and sometimes it shows more than we’d like. That doesn’t mean it’s off-limits—it just means you need to work with it, not against it.

Here’s a trick that’s worked for women for generations: white tights underneath your white pants. Not pantyhose—actual tights or smoothing leggings. They help the pants drape better, keep things modest, and add that bit of polish. I’ve done it for years, and once you try it, you won’t go back.

And believe it or not, red underwear can sometimes work better than nude under white linen. Don’t ask me about the science—I just know it blends in better on a lot of skin tones, especially if you’re not ghost-pale. The key is to make sure it’s not bright lipstick red—think brick or deep rust. And as always, check yourself in good light before you head out the door.

Now, another trick for linen pants - let them be linen pants. You know they might be a bit more sheer and that’s fine, especially for holidays where you’re throwing them on over a bathing suit to hit the buffet.

Finding the Right Pair

Look for linen that has some weight to it or even a bit of a lining. Cheap, thin fabric won’t do you any favours. You want something with a bit of structure that glides instead of  grabbing. Like this pair from Dunes.

A flat front helps smooth things out. A bit of tailoring goes a long way. And the shape? Go for something relaxed—wide-leg or straight cut. We’re not doing skinny jeans here. We’ve earned our comfort, and we’re going to enjoy it.

And Yes, They’ll Get Dirty

Of course they will. You’ll sit on something. You’ll drop something. That’s life. But don’t let a little mess scare you off.

Here’s what’s worked for me and just about every other woman I’ve known who’s lived a little:

  • Dish soap right away for grease or food—just dab it on, cold water rinse, no rubbing.

  • Baking soda or cornstarch for oil. Let it sit a bit, brush it off before you wash.

  • Hydrogen peroxide mixed with water works wonders on things like grass or underarm stains.

  • And the old faithful: lemon juice and sunshine. You hang them on the line and let nature do her thing. Works every time.

Keep a stain stick in your bag if you’re heading out for the day. It’s not being fussy—it’s being prepared.

So Should You Wear White Pants?

Of course you should. You’re wiser now. You know what suits you. And you’re not here to please anyone but yourself. White pants aren’t about looking perfect—they’re about feeling good.

So if you’ve been avoiding them because you thought you couldn’t pull them off, I’m here to say: nonsense. You absolutely can.
