What style should a 60 year old woman wear? Let me tell you.
You know what I hear in my shop every week?
“Does this make me look old?”
“Does this make me look too young?”
“What should I wear? I’m over 60, you know?”
I’ve been hearing this for the last twenty years! We opened in 2005—I was fifty at the time (I know, I don’t look a day over fifty now 😜)—and it’s always the same question: “What are you supposed to wear when you’re a woman of a certain age?”
Last week, I talked about wardrobe basics for when you’re over sixty, and now here’s how you can make them look more fun.
The beautiful thing about being over sixty? People stop caring about what you do.
Do you remember when we were in our twenties and thirties and it was all, “Is that what you’re going to wear? You’re a mom.” “Oh, Helen, is that what you’re going to wear to work? It’s a bit revealing, isn’t it?”
Well, now I’m sixty, and people don’t care. So that’s the first thing I want you to do—get a little wild.
If you remember from our conversation about basics, I suggested the Foxcroft button-up blouse—stretchy and comfortable—with the Charlie B jeans, again, comfortable and easy. Here’s what you can wear on top to give your outfit a little more oomph. We need to have a little fun!
Option 1: The Joseph Ribkoff sparkle jean jacket. Yes, you can wear denim on denim. Not only are we showing off our Canadian tuxedos, but you can add a little sparkle.
Now, here’s the trick—when you’re adding sparkle like that, you want to make sure that it’s in a classic cut, like this denim jacket. It’s a great little topper for any black pants or dress, especially if you don’t like wearing a lot of jewelry.
Option 2: Add some colour! A wrap, a fun necklace, a beautiful scarf—all great ways to add some colour to your basics. Here’s how to wear some of those wraps—click the video below. I know we want to wear black (we’ve been wearing black our whole lives), but when you have silver hair—as most of us do—black can be very harsh against our skin. Try some colour up by your face. Think of it like blush, but on your clothing instead of in your makeup bag.
Option 3: A basic outfit needs something fun, like an interesting jacket. We just got a shipment of Tara Vao, and they have fantastic jackets. Interesting shapes, fun prints, great details—they’re a fantastic little topper. They’re very lightweight, so they give some coverage to our arms without being too hot.
