Style Tips for Women Over 50: Lessons From Our Last Fashion Show
What we learned from our last fashion show,
It’s not very often you see women like us, older - in case you didn’t know, strutting their stuff on a runway. Now, with this last one we did it was a little different. We were invited into a lovely lady’s house and set up the fashion show right there in her living room.
When I got there, sure there was an element of setting up, but let’s not talk about the boring parts. Let’s talk about when the other ladies started to arrive and I noticed that they were all dressed so well!
Bright colours, fun prints, flattering cuts.
I know oftentimes we’re not quite sure what looks exactly right when you get to be my age because all of those “rules” aren’t really designed for us but I think that’s what makes it fun.
When there are no rules because your waist has gone away with the wind and your bust is hanging a few inches lower than it probably should and you don’t give a darn about it you really can start playing with your clothes. Or you can start hiding, but here at Three Wild Women we don’t hide and I suspect that’s why you’re here too. You’re not so much into the idea of hiding in your clothes.
So, here’s what I noticed, what I learned and what I’d like you to try the next time you feel like getting a little more dressed up.
1. Try some colour.
Black is great, it’s a classic, it will never go out of style but it is quite harsh against ladies with silver hair. Try something with a bit of colour in it, even if it’s not all the colours of the rainbow you can still have fun with colour. Don’t give a hoot about those colour theory analysis things that you got done when you were 30. They’re probably out of date now anyway. If you like the colour on you just trust your eyes.
2. Have fun with some texture.
We’re getting into that season that’s all about texture so mix a few together. Find a fun mix between a chunky knit and a great skirt or pant.
3. The accessories really elevate that outfit and just add a finishing touch to the whole look.
I would say put on something.
If you’re wearing a V-neck or a scoop neck, try a necklace.
If you’re wearing shorter sleeves try a bracelet.
A belt, some great earrings, a fabulous bag.
There are so many options!
And just have fun with it. Take it from me, no one is going to say anything.
Near the end of the event we were giving away prizes to women who had funny little things in their purse and I asked, “Does anyone have a rain bonnet?”
Do you remember those?
Anyway, the room was quiet and finally I heard a, “Oh! I have one!” and this lady ran over to her purse and pulled out a reusable shopping bag and put it over her head, tying the handles under her chin.
We all laughed and sure enough, she won the prize.
But that’s what it’s about really, just having some fun. Or maybe, getting a little wild.
