Spring Layering| Fashion Tips for Women Over 50

Well,

Since we had a snow storm in the first week of April here in Ottawa, I figured we should talk a little about spring transition dressing—especially for those of us who still want to look stylish without freezing our ankles off.

If you're a woman over 50 (like us - and I'm being generous) trying to figure out how to layer for spring without losing your personal style, you're not alone. That pesky time of year when it’s too cold for linen dresses but too warm for oversized cozy sweaters?

Yup, we hear that question all the time in the boutique.

"Helen, How do I look stylish now that I'm over 50 and retired?"
"Leslie, How do I layer - because I have a tummy?"
"Deb, What do I wear for spring because who knows what the weather will be?!"

Well, that's what this blog is about - getting through those questions.

The reason it’s so difficult to dress during the spring is because we’re mixing two different aesthetics. So - here is how you can layer for spring and not look like a man on the first day of above freezing temperatures walking around in a parka and shorts.

Make Each Layer an Outfit

Take this Multiples blouse. Lightweight, great summer print and a great piece all on its own but you can also layer with it.

Layer it underneath the Habitat Daisy sweater if you’re a little wild and are willing to mix a couple of prints or the Charlie B Cotton Sweater to allow the print to stand out. Mixing prints is always a personality choice - so that's up to you.

Now, the bottoms, if you’re going to go fun on the top let’s go a little more classic on the bottom with a great transition piece - jeans. The high waisted Charlie B Claudia jean will keep your tummy locked in, looks great with both the layered sweater and with the blouse alone. No tucking required!

Remember that each layer needs to make its own outfit! Pair it with a pair of little booties if you’re living somewhere like we are in Ottawa with snow, or if you’re somewhere warmer, a pair of sneakers.

And for that extra little layer pop on the Liverpool Peplum Jacket.

Why? Because it matches the colour of both layers and adds that one little extra layer of warmth.

That’s how you dress for transitions. Easy right? If you’re thinking,

“Helen - that was not easy, I didn’t understand any of that.” then come into Three Wild Women and let us help you. It’s always easier in person and everything we mentioned is available in store for you to try.
