Mother of the Bride or Groom? Here’s What to Wear Without Feeling Overdone or Out of Place

So, your kid is getting married.

You're thrilled. A little emotional. Maybe a little overwhelmed.
 And now you’re asking:

“What should I wear as the mother of the bride (or groom)?”

We hear this constantly at the shop—and trust me, you’re not alone. Most women aren’t looking for something flashy or fussy. They want to feel special, yes—but also like themselves.

I actually have my niece’s wedding to go to this season so everything I’m about to say is good practice for me too.

The good news is you don’t have to be flashy or fussy anymore, most of these weddings are pretty casual compared to all the fluff and whatnot that we had to deal with at our own weddings. Do you remember those puffy sleeves?

Let’s go through my most commonly asked questions:

What should a mother of the bride or groom wear in 2025?

First things first - You don’t need sequins. (not that a little bling in your accessories would hurt ) and you don’t need a stiff jacket.
What you DO need is something that makes you feel comfortable, confident, and appropriate for the day—without sacrificing who you are.

In 2025, we’re seeing more mothers wearing:

  • Soft dresses with movement (not tight or boxy)

  • Natural, flattering colours (dusty blue, soft pink, navy, sage)

  • Comfortable fabrics with stretch

  • Sleeves! (Yes, they exist—and they’re lovely.)

  • Subtle detail—pleats, ruching, a flutter sleeve—without the bling

The new Shyloh collection checks every one of those boxes, which is why we brought it in.

Do I have to match the bridal party?

Not unless they ask. And even then—it’s more about complementing than matching.

Here’s the general guideline:
Stay within the wedding’s colour palette or tone. So if the party is in blush or neutrals, soft florals or muted pinks work beautifully. If it’s an evening affair in rich tones, navy, plum, or deeper jewel colours are elegant choices.

Our team is happy to help you navigate colour if you’re unsure—just bring a photo of the dresses or the invite.

Can I wear something comfortable and still look dressed up?

Yes. Yes. One more time for the women in the back: YES.

Comfort and elegance can live in the same dress. You just need the right fit, the right fabric, and the right styling. That’s what we love about Shyloh—it’s designed for women who want to move, breathe, eat, dance, and feel beautiful while doing it.

I’m not a “dress” person. What are my options?

Great question—and no, you don’t have to wear a dress.

A well-cut pantsuit, a flowy dressy jumpsuit, or an elegant separates set can all work for a wedding. We often help women build their own “outfit formula” that fits their shape and their comfort level.

Not sure where to start? Come in, and we’ll try a few things on. We’re not here to sell you something you won’t wear—we’re here to help you find something you’ll love wearing.

Whether the wedding is in Westboro, Wakefield, or halfway to Perth, we’ve got something that will carry you through the day feeling like your best self.

You’re not trying to outshine the bride.
But you are allowed to shine - like this SugarCane (just a little something fun I had to throw in there).

Whether you’re the mother of the bride, the groom, the stepmom, or just the woman who held everyone together to get to this day—you deserve to feel beautiful.

And we’d love to help with that.
Come into Three Wild Women in Westboro—or reach out if you’re shopping from elsewhere in the Valley. We’ll help you find the dress (or outfit) that lets you show up fully—without the stress.

Style that feels like you, only better
