How to Get Through Ottawa Winter Without Dressing Like You’ve Given Up
The snow came so early this year I had to put my sandals away in November!
So now that we’re officially in grey and slushy mode, what do you wear to feel a little like yourself?
I don’t know about you darlin’ but I’m not about to go living in survival mode until spring. It’s just not what we’re about here at Three Wild Women.
So yes, Ottawa feels wet and cold at the same time so we need layers without the bulk… I put on enough of that during the holidays, boots that don’t ruin my outfit, and something to brave the cold weather outside without fainting from the heat on the inside. Let’s get cracking!
First things first, here are the 5 pieces that us ladies of a certain age ACTUALLY want to wear on repeat. I’ve had enough of the internet telling me to dress old when I’m not.
You need a lightweight, don’t you worry. Statement knit. Like this one from Orange Fashion Village. Canadian made, great print. The print is going to do all the heavy lifting in your look without all of the fuss.
Accessories. Now that you have your lightweight sweater you’re going to add a dickie. Now, in my day these were called, “hickey-hiders” I’m sure none of the kids know that anymore but if it made you giggle then that was the point.

These no-sleeve collars are fantastic to make it look like you’re layering without all the bulk of a full collared shirt. How will it keep you warm? Well, this one won’t but a great scarf will and with your jacket that will be enough unless you’re out tobogganing with your kids or your grandkids.
Of course we can’t talk about accessories without talking about hats and gloves. These are non-negotiable for this time of year. Especially while you’re waiting for your car to heat up, you don’t want your fingers going numb. We have lots of beautiful hats, not just the standard toque. So if you’re looking for something a little more Wild (pun intended) you’ll have to check out some of these brimmed hats.
If you’re the type that needs extra warmth though you might consider an inside-jacket. These are the perfect little on again off again jackets. They are great for adding structure instead of bulk. Now, I’m not talking about a blazer, I’m talking about a jacket. Something like the Joseph Ribkoff Cardi or this great Habitat Jacket. Something that feels substantial but not overpowering.
You could also add one of the lux oversized scarves but even just writing this I’m getting warm.
We do have some lovely shawls though that would work if you’re not into a jacket look.
What you do need in your closet and something we don’t sell here so I can’t exactly help you out, but is a good pair of winter boots. I’m talking leather, everyday walking boots that don’t make you look like you’re going camping. Save those ones for camping. They should be water resistant and warm enough to walk up and down Westboro without your toesies falling off.
But that’s really all you need… Actually, you might also need a brooch or some earrings. Your neckline will be covered with the dicky and the scarf and all of that so a nice brooch on your jacket or some fabulous earrings really make a big difference when it comes to pulling your look together.
Of course you’ll have to try some of these tips out and let us know what you think. Make sure to tag us on Facebook with your winter outfit so we can see you all dolled up!
